Languages are unique, and so are the principles for using non-breaking spaces. Each language has their own distinct rules for orphaned bits of text that should not be left behind at the end of lines. Be it numbers without their unit symbols, one-character prepositions and conjunctions, compound product names that should be kept together on one line, dates, and more. Why? Because it simply doesn’t look professional.
String Factory processes bilingual files you work with every day in your favorite translation tools. These include Trados Studio project files (SDLPROJ), Trados Studio bilingual files (SDLXLIFF), Trados TagEditor bilingual files (TTX), Memsource bilingual files (MXLIFF), Wordfast project files (WF4 and SFC), and Wordfast bilingual files (TXLF). Processing project files means handling all bilingual files belonging to the project at once.
String Factory is powered by ingenious technology called regular expressions. The software comes with predefined sets of regex expressions for different languages that search for specified instances of text strings containing spaces, then replace these spaces with their non-breaking equivalents, allowing the whole string to be nicely wrapped together and stay on the same line. Regular expressions can be easily modified and customized to your liking and to the needs of your language. You can also create new sets of expressions based on the built-in ones, or from scratch.
All it takes to use String Factory is to install it, load a corresponding search expression file for your language, and drag and drop supported translated files. If your language is not yet included, you can still use the built-in global set of regular expressions, create your own, or send us an email with suggestions and, if feasible, we will create a new set of regular expressions for your language and include it in the next release of the software.
It’s more than just spaces. Although the main purpose of String Factory is to deal with non-breaking spaces, it can be used for virtually anything that you need to replace over and over because your workflow demands it, such as language codes in web addresses that should be localized, or common mistakes and typos not detected by the spellchecker.
